Substance 3D Painter
Adobe MAX 2022 Keynote Dragon

We are stoked to present our internal project created for the Adobe MAX 2022 conference keynote! This was especially exciting for us as we officially released Substance 3D Modeler 1.0 which was used to create the Dragon. We internally called her "Niodrara" after a street nearby to one of the Los Angeles based Artists. Check out the project below!

First Steps in creating "Niodrara" with Substance 3D Modeler

First, we gathered reference for Look & Feel to begin blocking out shape definition and overall look development. Blocking was done in Adobe Substance Modeler with proof of concept renders done in Stager.
Painting with Substance 3D Painter

Starting with Painter's baking from high res to low res, we were able to capture all of Modeler's sculpt details to then use for procedural processes. Masks like Curvature and AO were heavily used to capture skin valleys and scale peaks.
Rendering Niodrara

The final look was done inside Maya with Arnold thought could have been done in a long list of other programs such as Substance 3D Stager, Blender, Unreal Engine or C4D to name a few. Substance 3D Painter can be used with just about any rendering software! Check out the first round of Look Development below to test textures with a default light rig.

Scanning The Environment

We took advantage of Substance 3D Sampler's new 3D capture tool. Below is a photogrammetry scan of the rock used in the final animated image below.

Final Animated Project Niodrara

We wanted to showcase her moving with one very dramatic light to show off all the beautiful details that had been sculpted and later painted.

Adobe Max 2022 Keynote

We were SO proud to showcase this project on such a big stager at Adobe Max!

But wait, there's more! The Adobe Aero Experience

For this portion of the project, we scaled down the UDIM workflow to work inside Aero. With just a few textures, we were able to see Niodrara flapping her wings with a few friends sitting above the clouds.
